Flash Banner Design: Top Five Tips

Flash banner design is something it’s really easy to get wrong. People view bad flash banners as a form of spam and they can do real damage to your brand. For this reason most web designers recommend against the use of flash animation. However when handled correctly flash banners can be effective and some campaigns benefit greatly from their unique qualities. The following are our top five tips for good flash banner design:
1. The first and most important thing to consider is file size. Flash banners are always going to have a larger file size than static banners but you need to keep it to a minimum. If your banner loads slowly or fails to load it won’t net you any sales. Remember you’ve only got a few seconds to close the sale so if there’s nothing happening on screen you can’t generate traffic.
2. Make your flash banner design easy on the eyes. Use a small amount of text and don’t loop it faster than the eye can see. A lot of people find flash banners really distracting when they’re trying to read something else on the page. Always give people the option to pause or close your banner.

3. Use text that is persuasive. Consider the desires of your demographic and write to them directly. If you sell cold medicine write something like ‘Feeling under the weather?’
4. Make sure your flash banner matches your landing page aesthetically. This is a key element of branding as with repeated exposure people will begin to recognize and remember your brand. It’s also practical in that people need to be able to recognize that your landing page is from the same people as your banner or they will simply click away.
5. Another good idea is to include a call to action. Most people don’t pay too much attention to flash banners and some might not even realize they are interactive. Show them your flash banner design is interactive by including a little icon that says ‘read more’ or what have you.
