Banner design demands good hygienic practices. There’s nothing like the smell of fresh linen. It makes you feel relaxed, safe and comfortable. Okay, we’re a few years away from developing a technology that transmits odors through the Internet. But we can create the same soothing emotion through a tidy, nifty banner design. Cleanliness: close to godliness.
Web banners became the online equivalent of flyers: When we arrive home, we have our pockets (or our cache memory) full of them. Some will drag our eye; most of them will end in the trash, only a few will be read. They are an effective way to promote our companies, services and events: affordable media that reaches different targets and covers all bases. What else can you ask for?
Sadly, it’s not an eco-friendly system. As soon as the banner is read, chances are that it will bother the viewer. If the information is not attractive, if the design is messy and/or if the media annoys the viewer, the message will end up in the trash. Details such as these can easily be forgotten. Sometimes we just want to shove our message we don´t even think about the person who is going to receive it. “Make it shiny! Make it glossy! Make it HUGE! BRIGHT COLORS! NOISES AND BLEEPS! SPAZZTIC ANIMATION! BIGGER! SHINIER!”
…are you ready for your close-up, Mr. Deville, or are you finally ready to accept that, sometimes, less is more?
Of course, we want our banners to be attractive. But we want to attract customers, not flies. Some hygienic measures are in order to get the message through. Every company must bear in mind that the information can be discarded and forgotten. The attention span gets progressively shorter and we can’t count on our clients’ time. That’s why a clear, decent banner design is critical to start a promotion campaign.
Here are a few pointers that can help you sanitize your campaign. Remember: safety first.
1. Less is more.
Be as concise as possible and make sure that the information you’re giving to your customer is useful, practical and relevant to the products or services you’re offering
2. Keep it clean.
Sex sells, but it doesn’t sell everything. Having a cute girl in skimpy clothing might cause expectation in male customers, but it will cause greater disappointment as soon as they realize they reached a different business and the girl's phone is not there. Don't deceive your customer with false expectations and cheap tricks.
3. Don’t spread the mess.
Don’t you just hate it when you click on a banner and it bloats all over the entire screen? You are not alone. People often multitask when they are in front of a computer and a huge, unavoidable window that swallows the screen will cause a wide range of emotions that go from confusion to anger.
4. Healthy, yet catchy.
Who said you can’t be concise, tidy and vibrant at the same time? An attractive language will capture a broader audience and it will make people click with joy. Know how to make your business proposal and make sure your customer will receive the requested information.
Don’t you just feel all better now? A well-groomed banner design, tidy ideas and pertinent information embedded on every ad makes part of a healthy banner marketing strategy.
